The exact mechanism of how antidepressants work is still not entirely clear. Generic Paxil (Paroxetine) belongs to the family of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). It works against depression and anxiety by blocking the natural reabsorption of a chemical called serotonin in the brain. This increases the amount of serotonin, which has a positive effect on the mood.
