Ramipril is a type of drug called ACE inhibitor. ACE stands for Angiotensin Converting Enzyme. Ramipril works by helping to block an enzyme that normally causes blood vessels to narrow. By blocking this enzyme, ramipril causes blood vessels to relax, which lowers blood pressure. Because of this function, Ramipril is very effective in treating high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and to improve survival rates after a heart attack.

Ramipril belongs to a class of drugs called ACE inhibitors. ACE stands for Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme. Ramipril helps to block these enzymes, which are a normal part of a reaction in the body that causes the blood vessels to narrow (constrict). By blocking this enzyme, it causes blood vessels to relax, which lowers blood pressure.

The usual dose of Ramipril is 2.5-20 mg a day as a single dose or two divided doses. Patients taking diuretics or who have renal artery stenosis (narrowing of the arteries going to the kidney) may require lower doses.

Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of Ramipril. You must also continue taking Ramipril, even if you are feeling well. Ramipril does not cure high blood pressure, it merely keeps it under control. Remember to take the drug regularly for it to have maximum effect.

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking Ramipril if you:
- Have heart disease
- Have liver failure
- Have kidney disease
- Have diabetes
- Will be undergoing surgery or anesthesia.
Let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant. During pregnancy, Ramipril can cause damage or even death to the developing fetus. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take (including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements), especially if you are taking a diuretic (water pill) or a potassium supplement. Do not take any salt substitutes containing potassium without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
