Allergies occur when the body's immune system reacts against otherwise harmless substances. This reaction is partly caused by the release of a certain chemical from the cells of the body, called histamine. Zyrtec (Ceterizine) belongs to the family of the antihistamines and works by blocking the actions of histamine. By doing that, Zyrtec (Ceterizine) all but eliminates the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
